Angus Mobile
Case Study

A Cross-Platform Mobile Solution for the World’s Largest Beef Cattle Organization

Angus mobile replaces fragmented mobile experiences with a single modern mobile platform. Today, it serves as a digital hub where breeders and association members can manage cattle information, access member resources, receive notifications, and stay connected to everything happening within the Angus community.

Client Overview

The American Angus Association (AAA) is the largest beef cattle organization in the United States, representing more than 21,000 members across the country and Canada. Their work spans the full Angus cattle industry, from helping breeders manage herd genetics to providing digital tools for registrations, transfers, and performance data.

The association wanted to replace its existing Android and iOS applications with a single cross-platform solution that would deliver a consistent user experience, provide members quick access to critical information and make it easier to maintain and introduce new features over time.

Having already partnered with Zco on previous projects, the association knew firsthand our technical expertise and ability to deliver custom software solutions that met their goals. So when it came time for the next phase of their digital transformation, they chose Zco again.

Partnership Timeline

Zco’s relationship with the American Angus Association spans multiple staff augmentation engagements, with our team functioning as an extension of theirs. Each project addressed a different stage of their technology evolution while deepening our understanding of their business, workflows, and member needs.

The Main

Challenges

The Association had reached a point where maintaining separate Android and iOS applications was creating unnecessary operational complexity and slowing product evolution.

Parallel Development effort
Every new feature, bug fix, and update had to be built, tested, and released separately for Android and iOS. This doubled the engineering effort, increased development costs, and extended release cycles.

Technology drift
Their backend systems and internal infrastructure were built on Microsoft .NET, while its native mobile apps operated separately. This made integrations more difficult and reduced opportunities for code reuse across projects.

Delivering a consistent member experience
Ensuring feature parity across platforms became an ongoing challenge. Members on different devices could receive updates at different times, resulting in an inconsistent experience and additional coordination for every release.

Long-term maintainability
As the apps aged, the cost of maintenance grew, and the technical debt made future improvements harder to justify.

Our Solution Approach

Collaborative Development:

From day one, our developers worked within the client’s existing development environment, collaborating closely with their internal teams and contributing efficiently throughout the software lifecycle.

Iterative Feature Development:

Every feature in Angus Mobile was designed around the day-to-day activities of Angus breeders and association members. To ensure a reliable and cohesive experience, each functional module was developed iteratively, allowing the team to validate integrations, refine user workflows, and ensure a stable foundation before introducing additional capabilities.

Architecture Highlights

Angus Mobile was built from scratch, which gave our team the opportunity to make sound architectural decisions upfront rather than inheriting the constraints of the legacy applications.

  • Built on .NET MAUI Blazor Hybrid to align with the client’s existing Microsoft ecosystem and enable maximum code sharing across Android and iOS.
  • Shared UI and business logic using Blazor to ensure a consistent experience across platforms.
  • Native device capabilities accessed through .NET MAUI wherever platform-specific functionality was required.
  • REST API integration with the Association’s existing backend systems.
  • Scalable architecture designed for easier maintenance, scalability, and feature expansion.
